Hundreds of religious leaders from across Bukedi sub-region gathered at the Tororo District headquarters on Saturday to thank God for the re-election of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The event, organized by the Council of Bishops, Bukedi, was presided over by the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, who represented the President as chief guest.
Celebrations began with bishops dedicating newly elected sub-regional political leaders to God as they prepared to assume office. Leaders praised President Museveni for what they described as wise and transformational leadership.
“The President has worked for his people—road network improvements, better health and schools, and the creation of new administrative units in Tororo have all played a part,” said Bishop Girado Olukol, Chairperson of the Council of Bishops, Bukedi Sub-region.
Religious leaders noted that Bukedi contributed a significant share of votes to President Museveni in the recently concluded elections.
“There is no perfect election, but all elections are free and fair, so people should not complain,” said Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission.
With Museveni reportedly winning across all seven districts of Bukedi, religious leaders called for ministerial appointments in recognition of the sub-region’s contribution.
“We deserve more positions in the cabinet because our sub-region has done what others have not. Please, President, listen to our prayers,” Bishop Olukol urged.
John Okea, Tororo District chairperson, thanked religious leaders for their moral guidance while emphasizing the need for continued government support.
“The President should consider religious leaders at all levels. Imagine life without them—how many criminals would we have?” he said.
In a speech delivered on his behalf, Minister Oboth-Oboth acknowledged the role of religious leaders in promoting unity, guiding communities spiritually, and contributing to nation-building.
“It is important for our people to both know God and work. Very, very important,” he said.
On behalf of President Museveni, Oboth-Oboth handed over Shs50 million to support the religious leaders in covering costs incurred while organizing the thanksgiving event.
The gathering highlighted the influential role of religious leaders in Bukedi’s political and social landscape, with many calling for continued recognition and support from government.
